Wedding Day

 Step 1        Step 2      Step 3
DEMO in oil for portrait class - Port Kells Art Club January 2010
Step 1 - This underpainting was completed using burnt sienna and terre verte (earth green).
Step 2 - I painted the left side of Heather's face using titanium white with a little bit of yellow ochre and raw umber.  The dress is titanium white.
Step 2 continued - I then painted the shadow side of Heather's face, using a mix consisting primarily of raw umber, yellow ochre, and a touch of terre verte and alizarin crimson or cadmium red.  More red is used (still sparingly, though!) on the cheek, nose and mouth.
Step 2 continued - Students thought that the shadow side of her face was quite dark, so in order to show that it is 1-2 value tones lighter than the black I was planning to mix, I put the 'black' (a mix of terre verte, alizarin crimson, and raw umber) on the left side, a bit earlier than I would normally do.
Step 3 - After painting the neck & arms, I did more glazing over the face and lightened the shadow side.  I painted the rest of the dark areas.  Notice how much more 'cool' the whole thing feels.  I wanted it to be so, as the mood is meant to be one of stunned anticipation with a hint of disbelief.

Next Monday: I will glaze over the neck & arms and then complete the details in the hair and headband(see the two reference photos below).  I also want to very slightly darken the top of her nose.
